First MEC : 07/03/1972
Mileage : 180 000 km
Chassis number: 00SB8168
History :
Our example, a 2.7 carburetted version, has a special history. In 1996, the car was involved in a collision with another vehicle. The expert at the time advised against repairs, deeming them too extensive. However, as the damage was mainly limited to the bodywork, the owner at the time decided to have the car rebuilt and restored to its original condition, which was achieved in just a few months. It is important to note that this work is documented in the extensive file of invoices, which dates back to 1993 and extends right up to the present day.
In short, this SM is in excellent condition, both in terms of appearance and operation.
It was registered new in France in 1972. Before 1993, the car would have had two different owners. Then, it belonged to the third until 2003 and the fourth sold it to the current owner in 2017.
Condition :
General: This SM is in very good condition. It is in its original condition and has been very regularly maintained. Its mechanics are reliable and efficient, and its successive owners have always cared about its regular use.
Exterior: In 1997, the body was replaced and the car refurbished. The car has already been repainted in its original Gris l'Argentière colour. It is in very good condition, although not perfect. In particular, there are a few imperfections and signs of wear and tear. The headlights, chrome and windows are in very good condition.
Interior: The interior is very well preserved. The black leather seats are in very good condition and live up to their reputation for providing excellent support and comfort. The carpets are in fine condition, as are the chrome, the fittings and the black roof lining, which is as good as new. All the instrumentation is complete and functional, including the Jaeger clock.
Mechanics: The car is mechanically very sound. The engine and gearbox work perfectly. The car has recently undergone significant work on the steering, front axle, rear axle and carburettors. As a result, it's ready to hit the road in comfort.
Chassis and underpinnings: Fundamentals such as the wheel arches, floorboards and chassis show no signs of corrosion.
Consumables: This SM is fitted with the famous Michelin XWX tyres, just as it left the factory!

The Citroën SM is a car of which the French are proud, despite its relative commercial failure (with only 6 years of existence and 12,920 units produced). With its breathtaking lines designed by Robert Opron, its hydraulic suspension and its Maserati V6 engine designed by the wizard Giorgio Alfieri, it had everything we needed to love it. If Citroën hadn't suffered at the same time the closure of the American market, the enormous financial losses of the rotary piston engine adventure, Michelin's willingness to let go of the business and, to cap it all, an oil crisis in 1973, the SM's future might well have been different.
Despite this, the SM will remain in the minds of the French. Its design, of course, but also its presence for over 50 years in the garages of the Elysée Palace as a ceremonial car, thanks to the two presidential SMs ordered by Georges Pompidou, did much to embody the 70s. Despite its reputation for technical complexity, the SM is not the monster many garages would have you believe. It had long since been "made reliable", and even improved, as Georges Regembeau's work on the V6 proved, giving it even more horsepower.
