Reluctant to go down-market with its own name, Ferrari had tried the adventure in the mid-60s with that of its son, Dino, and with some success: the 206 and then 246 GT, with rear mid-engine and V6, had met with the small success that can still be seen today. By 1974, all that remained in the catalog was the recent Bertone-designed 308 GT4, with 4 seats and a V8, but a complicated physique. Ferrari then set about creating a more consensual descendant of the 246 GT than the GT4, while retaining the latter's excellent V8 engine. This project gave birth to the fabulous Ferrari 308 GTB (then GTS), a mythical car in more ways than one. This was the basic idea behind the (very rapid) design of the 308 GTB: to continue the spiritual or technical heritage of the Dino, while reviving the design so dear to Pininfarina (who was entrusted with the project instead of Bertone); to reintegrate the entry-level "V8" range within the parent company and under the Ferrari brand; and finally, to significantly increase sales (Fiat, a new shareholder since 1969, was not averse to increasing production to generate juicy profits).
