In 1965, the venerable 356 bowed out after an eighteen-year career, leaving the more recent 911 to occupy the field alone. Alone? Not quite, in fact, as the demise of the 356 posed a commercial problem for Porsche's management, as the 911 - larger, better equipped and systematically equipped with the company's own flat-six engine - proved to be much more expensive than its predecessor, and consequently out of reach for a number of potential customers. The solution was called the 912, and would embody the German company's entry-level range until the appearance of the VW-Porsche 914 in 1969. Incidentally, the definition of the model was disconcertingly simple: the six-cylinder of the 911 was replaced by the flat-four of the former 356! With its 90 hp, the car is obviously less swift than its range-mate, but there's no denying the seductive appeal of the whole package - especially when, as here, it's a rare Targa version, of which fewer than 2,500 were built.
