History: This car was delivered new in 1962 in Italy. The current owner has owned it since 1984. He used it regularly until 2000. This Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet was then stored in Burgundy until 2015, when the owner decided to begin the restoration of this iconic car. The restoration will last until 2024, at a cost of around €150,000. The bodywork was entrusted to Pacific Garage in Vernon, where key parts such as the wings, floor and side members were replaced with new original parts. The mechanical parts, including the engine, running gear, brakes and exhaust, were completely overhauled by Mercedes-Benz dealer Leroyer in Richeville. Note that this rare model, produced in just 2,600 examples, even made the cover of Auto-Retro magazine in 1993.
Condition:
General: This Mercedes-Benz 220SE cabriolet is presented in excellent overall condition.
Exterior: The bodywork has been fully restored with a champagne metallic paint finish, replacing the original white. The paintwork is tight and shiny, with no signs of corrosion or dents. The chrome, like the wheels, mirrors and headlights, is in very good condition, with no significant impact or scratches. The soft top, which was replaced in 1984, is still in excellent condition (the car having always been stored indoors), and guarantees a perfect seal.
Interior: The original interior is very clean and well preserved, with a magnificent patina that testifies to the care taken in preserving the vehicle. The black leather seats and upholstery are in remarkable condition, while the carpets have been reupholstered in the original style to preserve the authenticity of the interior. The brown alpaca bonnet, lined with felt, is in very good condition. Although the bodywork and mechanics have undergone a complete restoration, the owner has deliberately chosen to retain the original patina of the oak woodwork and leather, adding to the historic charm of this refined interior.
Powertrain: Mechanically, the engine works perfectly, with no abnormal vibrations or noises, ensuring reliable and very healthy roadholding. The 4-speed manual gearbox and reverse gear operate perfectly. The brakes, with discs at the front and drums at the rear, are assisted by a brake servo and offer effective stopping power. The power steering enhances driving comfort, making this car as pleasant to manoeuvre as it is to drive on long journeys.
Underpinnings: Having been fully restored, the car's underpinnings are sound and free from corrosion. Photos are available on request.
