Presented in 1998, the Arnage's destiny was a strange one, for although the car was designed with the help of BMW engineering, it was Volkswagen who ultimately became the firm's new owner, and wasted no time in reintroducing, initially under the "Red Label" name, the "historic" V8 that had appeared under the hood of the S2 in 1959. In order to differentiate them, the rare examples powered by the Bavarian engine - a 4.4-liter eight-cylinder also supercharged, but far more modern and also, don't repeat it, less costly to maintain - were named "Green Label" and production ceased at the end of 2000. Leave it to self-proclaimed purists, who swear by the legendary "6 three-quarter" V8, to quibble: just take the wheel of an Arnage rigged in this way and you'll discover a harmonious blend of German technology and authentic British charm!
