Ferrari has long been in the habit of renaming its models whenever they undergo a restyling, especially as this operation is always accompanied by significant technical evolutions. The 575M unveiled in the autumn of 2002 is no exception to the rule: this is first and foremost a redesigned and optimized 550. Both the stroke and bore of the V12 have been increased, resulting in a displacement of just over 5.7 liters; power has been increased by thirty horsepower, and performance has quietly improved. For the first time, customers could choose between the traditional six-speed manual gearbox and an automated unit known as F1, which would prove popular and subsequently lead to the regrettable demise of the clutch pedal and, above all, of the metal grille which, for decades, enabled more than one newspaper columnist to fill entire paragraphs. In the past, a Ferrari without this grille was a bit like a BMW with front-wheel drive - strictly unthinkable. But now that electronics have replaced the romantic clang of yesteryear, and if we look at the figures of the time with all due coolness, the benefits are still not considerable, on the order of - for example - a tenth of a second over the standing start kilometer, according to the factory. It's called progress, they say. It's not just the Gauls who are resistant...
