Restyling a masterpiece is no easy task, and many a stylist has had his or her teeth knocked in, whether you're thinking of the Peugeot 406 coupé, the Aston Martin Lagonda or the FSO Polonez. However, in the mid-1980s, when you entrusted the job to Pininfarina, you could be pretty sure you were on the right track: there were still some legendary designers whose primary concern was consistency of line, and who hadn't spent their childhood making origami. And so, when the Ferrari 308 became the 328 in the autumn of 1985, it was a miracle of sorts: after ten years, the most enchanting of all berlinettes was content with a minimalist update that was both in keeping with the decade and deeply respectful of the original vocabulary, while the mechanics found their way back to performance.
